Houston City Council unanimously voted to rename George Bush Intercontinental Airport's Terminal E after the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, recognizing her decades of service and contributions to the city.
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee will be remembered at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). Sheila Jackson Lee served as the representative for Houston's 18th Congressional District for almost 30 years. A motion to rename Terminal E in her honor was passed unanimously by the Houston City Council.
The decision honors Jackson Lee's long-lasting effects on the city, such as her success in getting the airport in her district more than $125 million in federal funds.
During the council meeting, Mayor Sylvester Turner said, "Sheila Jackson Lee dedicated her life to public service, and her contributions to Houston will be remembered for generations."
Jackson Lee died in July. He was 74 years old and had been sick with pancreatic cancer. She pushed for projects that changed Houston's infrastructure and made people's lives better. She was known for her unwavering support.
Changing the name of Terminal E to honor her will be a lasting tribute to her contributions to the progress of the city. Now, the plan goes to the airport officials to be officially approved and put into action.
If it is approved, the Sheila Jackson Lee Terminal will be added to the airport's list of essential dedications. This will continue Houston's tradition of honoring important leaders who helped shape the city's character.
