The Heritage Museum of Montgomery County in Conroe celebrated its 40th anniversary in January. Such celebration reflects four decades dedicated to preserving and sharing the region’s history. Director Suann Hereford emphasized the museum’s importance in informing visitors about the county's history and cultural relevance.
The museum showcases two historic homes. One is the Grogan-Cochran House, a century-old building constructed in 1924 that currently contains four galleries and a gift shop. The second home, a Sears Home Kit from the 1930s, was moved from Conroe Oil Field and provides a glimpse into the region’s oil boom era.
In 2024, the museum attracted 3,780 visitors from 36 states and 15 countries, highlighting its allure beyond Texas. As part of Black History Month, the museum features two special exhibits.
First is an exhibit dedicated to honoring influential figures, which showcases magazines and memorabilia celebrating the Obamas, Rosa Parks, Oprah Winfrey, Tina Turner, Prince, and others.
"The Faces of Tamina" is a photography and storytelling series derived from the book "The Ground on Which I Stand: Tamina, a Freedmen's Town," which emphasizes the rich history of this historic Black community.
"It is truly a pleasure to share the rich history of Conroe and Montgomery County with our visitors," Hereford stated.
The museum can be found at 1506 I-45 N., Conroe, and additional details are accessible at www.heritagemuseum.com.
